später doch die Zionsfahne er= griffen u. ich selbst bin ein Lover of Zion geworden. Palästina ist das einzige Land, wo unser Volk zur Ruhe kommen kann. Aber sofortige Hilfe thut Hunderttausenden Noth. Um diesen Zwiespalt zu lösen, gibt es nur Eins: ich muss von der Leitung zurück= treten. Ich werde, wenn Ihr wollt, Euch noch die Verhand= lungen dieses Congresses leiten u. zum Schluss wählt Ihr zwei Actions-Comités, eines für Ostafrika u. eines für Palästina. Ich lasse mich in keines mehr wählen. Aber ich werde denjenigen, die sich der Arbeit widmen, meinen Rath nie vorenthalten, wenn sie ihn wünsch verlangen. Und ich werde diejenigen, die sich dem schönen Traum hingeben, mit meinen Wünschen

 later I did lift up the flag of Zion and became myself a Lover of Zion. Palestine is the only land where our people can come to rest. But hundreds of thousands need immediate help.

 אבל אחר־כך אחזתי בכל זאת בדגל־ציון ואני עצמי הייתי ל־Lover of Zion (חובב־ציון). ארץ־ישראל היא הארץ היחידה שעמנו יכול להגיע בה אל המנוחה. אבל עזרה מיידית היא הצורך של מאות אלפים.

יש רק דרך אחת לאחות את הקרע הזה: עלי לפרוש מן ההנהגה. אם תרצו, עוד אנהל בשבילכם את הדיונים של הקונגרס הזה, ובסופו תבחרו שני ועדי־פועל, אחד בשביל מזרח אפריקה ואחד בשביל ארץ־ישראל. לא אתן שיבחרו בי אף לא לאחד מהם. ואולם לעולם לא אמנע את עצתי מאלה שיקדישו עצמם לעבודה, אם יבקשוה, ואלווה בברכותי את אלה שיתמסרו לחלום היפה.
