Wolffsohn hatte mir telegraphirt, ich möge mit dem morgen hier weilenden Siemens sprechen, wozu ich keine Lust habe, da der Korb schon vorliegt. 4 März [1899] Kokesch kam heute von London zurück. Die entsetzliche englische Juristenarbeit ist nun beendet. Die Vollmachten der Directoren und Aufsichtsräthe müssen ge= siegelt werden, die ungesiegelten die wir mit Ach u. Krach zusammengebracht, genügen nicht. Wieder ein Zeitverlust, dabei rückt die Subscription von der soviel abhängt heran. Ich habe heute befojhlen, weiter nicht zu säumen u. die Subscription einfach bei der Jüdischen Colonialbank selbst in London vorzunehmen. La dernière car= touche. Ich befürchte, dass es ein Misserfolg sein wird — mais rien n’arrive comme on le craint, ni comme on l’espère. Die Bank ist das bisher schwerste Stück der Arbeit. Sollte es gelingen, so

Wolffsohn had wired me that I should speak with Siemens, who will be in town tomorrow, but I don’t feel like it, because we have already been turned down.

Kokesch came back from London today. The horrible English legal work is now completed. The authorizations of the directors and members of the Council must be sealed; the unsealed ones, which we got together by the skin of our teeth, are not sufficient. Another loss of time; yet the subscription, on which so much depends, draws near. Today I gave orders not to delay any further and simply undertake the subscription at the Jewish Colonial Bank in London itself. La dernière cartouche [The last round of ammunition]. I am afraid it will be a failure—mais rien n'arrive ni comme on le craint ni comme on l'espère [but nothing happens as one fears, nor as one hopes].

 

The Bank is the hardest part of the work so far.

4 במארס [1899]

קוֹקֶש חזר היום מלונדון. העבודה המשפטית הנוראה באנגליה הסתיימה סוף־סוף. ייפויי־הכוח של המנהלים [הדירקטורים] ושל חברי המועצה נזקקים לחותם. אלה שאין עליהם חותם, שליקטנו אותם בקשיים ובעמל, אין בהם די. שוב אובדן זמן, ובינתיים מועד ההחתמה, שהרבה כל־כך תלוי בה, מתקרב והולך.

 היום הוריתי לא להשתהות עוד ולהתחיל בהחתמה בבנק הקולוניאלי [אוצר התיישבות היהודים] עצמו, בלונדון. La dernière cartouche (הכדור האחרון). אני חושש שזה  יהיה כישלון – Mais rien n'arrive ni comme on le craint, ni comme on l'espère (אך דברים אינם קורים לא כדרך שחוששים שיקרו ולא כדרך שמקווים שיקרו).

הבנק הוא המלאכה הקשה ביותר עד עכשיו.
