Da ich überhaupt von ihm nicht mehr

wollte, als das Letztere, so war ich

ganz zufrieden.

Ich sagte: „Hoffentlich, Excellenz, komme

ich nach einem halben Jahr auch

mit einem Korb voll Früchten.“

Gestern las ich noch vor der Abreise

(xx) im Burgtheater den Schauspielern „Unser

Käthchen“ vor. Ich wollte auch da ein

fait accompli schaffen. Wer weiss wie

lang ich noch in der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse] bin. Und

ich kenne heute die Menschen schon

genug, um zu wissen, dass sie mich

für den Verlust meiner Stellung auch

noch bestrafen würden.

Ich ging gestern nicht mehr ins

Since that was all I had wanted from him in the first place, I was quite content.

I said: “I hope, Your Excellency, that I, too, will return in half a year with a basket of fruit.”

Yesterday, prior to my departure, I read Unser Käthchen [Our Katie] to the actors in the Burgtheater. There, too, I wanted to establish a fait accompli. Who knows how much longer I shall be with the Neue Freie Presse. And by now I know people well enough to realize that they would also punish me for the loss of my position.

Yesterday I did not bother to go to the office, so as not to let myself be excited again by Messieurs Bacher and Benedikt.

כך גם הוא אינו רוצה לדחות אותי בקש. אסור שימליץ עלי, כי אם יעשה כן, יחשבו ששיחדו אותו. ואולם אם יפנו אליו, ישיב בחיוב.

והיות שממילא לא רציתי ממנו אלא זאת, הייתי מרוצה.

אמרתי: "אני מקווה, הוד מעלתך, שכעבור חצי שנה אשוב גם אני ובידי סל של פירות".

אתמול, לפני הנסיעה, עוד קראתי בבּוּרגתיאטר את "Unser Käthchen" ("קֶטכֶן שלנו״) באוזני השחקנים. גם בזה רציתי ליצור fait accompli (עובדה מוגמרת). מי יודע כמה זמן עוד אהיה ב־.N.Fr.Pr. והלוא אני מכיר את האנשים די והותר כדי לדעת שבעבור איבוד משרתי הם עוד ירצו להעניש אותי.

אתמול כבר לא הלכתי למשרד, כדי שהאדונים בּאכֶר ובֶּנֶדיקט לא ישובו וירגיזו אותי.
