Zionist. Er theilte mir bei dieser Gelegenheit mit, dass die jungen Leute in Mähren den Rabbinern schreiben, sie mögen Antheilscheine à 50 fl zur Gründung einer jüdischen Zeitung aufbringen. Das ist offenbar Kohns Idee.   5 October [1896], Wien Seit der letzten Eintragung schwere, wirre Tage mit viel Sorgen und Ekel. Ich habe mit „praktischen“ Leuten aus der Geschäftswelt u. Politik zu thun gehabt und oft be= dauert, das ich mich aus der Literatur in dieses Treiben hinausbegeben habe musste. Einige Tage waren voll von Versuchen der Zeitungsgründung. Der Bankdirector Dessauer hatte monatelang mit mir davon gesprochen, dass er resp[ektive] seine Bank sich Gold bedecken würde, wenn an der Zeitungsgründung (die natürlich als eine anständige, von Finanzgeschäften unabhängige gedacht war) mit einem Theil  

 He told me on this occasion that the young people in Moravia are writing the rabbis to raise share certificates at 50 guilders each for the founding of a Jewish newspaper.

 

This is evidently Kohn’s idea.

 

October 5, Vienna

 

Since the last entry, hard, chaotic days with much sorrow and disgust. I had dealings with “practical” people from the business and political worlds, and often regretted that I had to step out of the literary world into this hustle and bustle.

 

A few days were filled with attempts to found the newspaper. Dessauer the bank director had told me for months that he, or rather, his bank, would participate in the founding of the newspaper (which, of course, was conceived as a respectable venture, independent of financial deals) with part of the share capital.

5 באוקטובר [1896], וינה

מאז רשימת־היומן האחרונה, ימים קשים ומבולבלים עם הרבה דאגות וגועל־נפש. היה לי עסק עם אנשים "מעשיים" מעולם המסחר והפוליטיקה, ולא פעם הצטערתי שנאלצתי להתרחק מן הספרות ולהיכנס אל קלחת העשייה הזאת.

ימים אחדים היו רצופי ניסיונות לייסוד העיתון. מנהל הבנק דֶסאוּאֶר דיבר אתי חודשים ארוכים על כך שהוא, או הבנק שלו, ישתף עצמו בחלק מהון המניות בייסוד העיתון (שכמובן יהיה מכובד, לא־תלוי בעסקים פיננסיים).
