31 XII [1902] Wien Heute Abends, nachdem ich in der N[euen] F[reien] P[resse] wieder einmal die Feuilleton= laden zur Abreise gesäubert hatte, befiel mich eine schwere défaillance, die noch andauert. Ich war so oft u[nd] lange weg. Wenn ich jetzt wieder gehe ... Einmal wird’s doch zum Klappen kommen. Dann Existenzsorgen oder Stipendiat der Bewegung! Welche furchtbaren kleinen Schwierigkeiten lähmen mich angesichts der grossen. Ich habe davon Herznervositäten. Und doch: jetzt wo’s im Osten u. Westen des Mittelmeers knistert, die macedonische Frage im Frühjahr aufgerollt werden dürfte, die Theilung Marokkos vielleicht knapp, die (xx) italienische Annexion v[on] Tripolis sicher bevorsteht ist’s vom höchsten Werth, dass ich mit Lansdowne rede. Auch mit Rothschild. Ich fahre immer schwerer weg,

This evening, after I had once again cleared the feuilleton files at the N. Fr. Pr. preparatory to my departure, I had a severe défaillance [fit of depression] which still continues.

 

I was away so often and for so long. If I leave again now . . . Things are bound to come to a head some day. Then I shall either have the worry of making a living, or be the holder of a stipend from the movement!

 

What terrible small difficulties are paralyzing me in the face of the big ones.

 

And yet: now that things are crackling east and west of the Mediterranean, now that the Macedonian question will probably be opened up in the Spring, the partition of Morocco may be imminent, and the Italian annexation of Tripoli is definitely in the offing, it is of the greatest importance that I speak with Lansdowne. With Rothschild as well.

הערב, לאחר שב־.N.Fr.Pr שוב ניקיתי לפני הנסיעה את מגֵרות הפלייטונים, תקפה אותי חולשה קשה שעדיין נמשכת.

נעדרתי לעתים קרובות כל־כך ולזמן ממושך. אם עכשיו אצא שוב... פעם הלוא יגיעו הדברים לידי משבר. ואז – דאגות פרנסה, או להיות שכיר של התנועה.

 אילו קשיים קטנים איומים מפילים עלי שיתוק לנוכח הקשיים הגדולים.

 זה גורם לי מחושי לב. ובכל זאת: עכשיו, כשבמזרחו ובמערבו של הים התיכון מתלקחת אש, שאלת מקדוניה תעלה באביב, כשאנו עומדים אולי לפני חלוקת מרוקו ובוודאי צפוי סיפוח טריפּוֹלי לאיטליה – יהיה לכך ערך רב ביותר שאדבר עם לֶנסדאוּן, גם עם רוטשילד.
