Das Blatt soll liberal=conservativ-anti= semitisch, kurz ein Unding sein, aber typographisch (diebographisch) genau so ausgestattet wie die N[eue] Fr[eie] Pr[esse], die freilich auch ähnlich aus der alten Presse entstanden war. Ich liess nun vor Newlinski die Bemerkung fallen, diese Concurrenz sei dumm. Wenn man die N[eue] Fr[eie] Pr[esse] schwächen wolle, könne man es so nicht machen. Ich aber würde, weil man mir das vor einem Jahr gegebene Wort nicht gehalten und den Judenstaat, die Judensache nicht nur nicht unterstützt sondern geradezu böswillig verschwiegen hat — ein grosses Blatt (xx) gründen. Sofort erzählte Newlinski das seinem Freunde Kozmian — am Montag — u. als ich Dienstag im Burgtheater war, kam Kozmian

because the N. Fr. Pr. has been getting bothersome to Badeni’s administration since he made his peace with Lueger. The paper is to be liberal-conservative-anti-Semitic—in short, an impossibility,—but typographically (swipe-ographically) produced exactly like the N. Fr. Pr., which, to be sure, originated in a similar manner from the old Presse.

 

I dropped the remark in front of Newlinski that this competition was a stupid thing. If they intended to weaken the N. Fr. Pr., they couldn’t do it this way. However, because the word pledged to me a year ago has not been kept and the Jewish State, the Jewish cause, has not only not been supported but almost maliciously suppressed, I would—found a great paper.

 

Newlinski immediately told this to his friend Kozmian—on Monday—, and when I was at the Burgtheater on Tuesday, Kozmian came up to me and said that Graf Badeni, who was also present, wished to speak with me about “my” paper.

כי מאז ההתפייסות בין בּאדֶני ללוּאֶגֶר, החל N.Fr.Pr. להכביד על ממשלתו. העיתון הזה יהיה, לדבריו, ליברלי־שמרני־אנטישמי, בקיצור — יצור בלתי־אפשרי, ואילו בתדמיתו הטיפוגרפית (בתדמיתו הטיפוגרפית) יהיה שווה ל־.N.Fr.Pr, שגם הוא בעצם נטל בזמנו את צורתו באורח דומה מ־Presse  הישן.

 הערתי באוזני נֶוולינסקי, כבדרך אגב, שהתחרות הזאת היא אווילית. אם רוצים להחליש את ,N.Fr.Pr.

 

לא זו הדרך. אני הייתי מייסד עיתון גדול, וזאת משום שלא עמדו בדיבורם מלפני שנה ולא רק שלא תמכו במדינת־היהודים, בעניין־היהודים, אלא בזדון ממש עברו עליהם בשתיקה.

מיד — ביום ב׳ — נֶוולינסקי סיפר זאת לידידו קוֹזמיאן, וביום ג׳, כשהייתי ב"בּוּרגתאטר", ניגש אלי קוֹזמיאן ואמר שהגראף בּאדֶני, הנמצא בתאטרון אף הוא, מבקש לדבר אתי על "העיתון שלי".
