(xx) connaissais suffisamment le mouvement sionniste pour savoir d’avance de quelle façon serait reçu  (xx) la proposition anglaise. La gratitude était unanime, on était touché (xx) aux larmes — mais l’Afrique Orientale n’est pas la Paléstine. Après une lutte assez chaude  (xx) (xx) je ne pus mettre aux voix que la question préalable, c’est à dire l’expedition d’une commission d’exploration — le vote (xx) définitif étant réservé à un autre congrès dans un ou 2 ans. (xx) J’avais la plus grande peine pour emporter ce résultat  (xx) modeste car une opposition compacte était même contre la  (xx) politesse d’une prise en considération du projet anglais, et cette opposition se compose  (xx) presque exclusivement de sionnistes russes. Et dans une réunion  (xx) privé des sionnistes russes (xx) on commençait même déjà de me  (xx) qualifier de traitre!  (xx)

 I was sufficiently acquainted with the Zionist movement to know in advance how the English proposal would be received. They were unanimous in their gratitude, they were moved to tears —but East Africa is not Palestine.

 

After a rather hot fight I was able to put only the preliminary question to a vote: that is, to send an exploratory commission—the final decision being left to another Congress in a year or two.

 

I had the greatest difficulty in bringing about this modest result, for there was a solid opposition even to the courtesy of taking the English proposal under consideration. This opposition was composed almost exclusively of Russian Zionists. And at a private caucus of the Russian Zionists they even started accusing me of treason!

הרי היטבתי להכיר את התנועה הציונית כדי לדעת מראש כיצד תתקבל הצעת האנגלים. רגשי התודה היו משותפים לכול, הכול היו נרגשים עד דמעות – אבל מזרח אפריקה איננה ארץ־ישראל. אחרי מאבק סוער למדי לא יכולתי להעמיד להצבעה אלא את השאלה המִקדמית, כלומר שיגור משלחת חקר, ואילו ההצבעה הסופית מיועדת לקונגרס אחר, בעוד שנה או בעוד שנתיים.

השתדלתי מאוד להשיג את ההישג הצנוע הזה, שהרי אופוזיציה מסיבית אף התנגדה למעשה האדיבות לבחון את התוכנית האנגלית, והאופוזיציה הזאת מורכבת כמעט באורח בלעדי מציונים רוסים.

ובאספה פרטית של הציונים הרוסים אף החלו לתאר אותי כבוגד!
