Eine beklemmende Situation.   26 VI [1]900 Hechler schreibt mir heute Lord Rosebery sei hier u. räth mir ihn im Hotel aufzu suchen. Ich thu’s nicht, weil seine Ueber= legenheit zu gross wäre. Zu seiner (xx) Stellung kommt hier noch die Fremdendistinction hinzu. Anders in England. Da bin ich wenigstens ein Fremder.   In Ungarn melden Blätter, dass ich die rumänische  Auswanderung organisirt habe. Das Dementi in der Welt v[om] 29 d[iese]s ist sehr nöthig. Es muss an die Spitze des Blattes.

A chilling situation.

 

June 26, 1900

 

Hechler writes me today that Lord Rosebery is in town and advises me to call on him at his hotel. I’m not going to, because his superiority would be too great. In addition to his position he has the distinction of being a foreign visitor here.

 

It’s different in England. There I am at least a foreigner.

 

Hungarian papers report that I organized the Rumanian emigration. My denial in the Welt of the 29th of the month is very necessary. It must go on the front page.

הם מבקשים שאבוא לפגוש אותם. זה מבטא את הנאיביות שלהם, את האמון שהם רוחשים לי, אך גם את התובענות של אנשינו. "בעלי הצדקה" מווינה אינם נוקפים אצבע, ובידי אין שום אמצעים בשביל המסכנים הללו.

26 ביוני [1900]

הֶכלֶר כותב לי היום שהלורד רוֹזבֶּרי נמצא כאן ומייעץ לי שאבקר אצלו במלון. לא אעשה זאת, כי עליונותו עלי תהיה לי לרועץ. מיתוספת גם העובדה שהוא אורח זר בעל מעמד.

באנגליה זה שונה. שם, לפחות, אני הזר.

בהונגריה כותבים בעיתונים שאני ארגנתי את ההגירה הרומנית. נדרשת הכחשה ב־Die Welt של 29 בחודש. היא צריכה לבוא בראש הגיליון.
