Ich sagte, dass ich die Entscheidung S[eine]r M[ajestät] noch nicht kenne. Ibr[ahim] meinte darauf, ich dürfe an den guten Gesinnungen S[eine]r M[ajestät] nicht zweifeln, auch wenn er mit mir nicht abschliesse. Er sei zwar ein absoluter Herrscher, könne aber keineswegs machen, was er wolle. „Ich verstehe“, sagte ich. „dass es eine Staatsraison gibt, welche vor allem gehört werden will.“ „Ja“, bestätige Ibrahim, „u. für Sie persönlich hat S[eine] M[ajestät] viel Achtung u. Sympathie. Was Sie für Ihr Volk thun wollen, ist sehr edel. Le sionnisme est très noble.“ Ich dankte u. sagte, dass ich immer ein Freund der Türkei u. ein Anhänger dieses judenfreundlichen Sultans bleiben würde. Aber die Noth unserer Leute im Osten Europas gestatte uns nicht, länger zu warten. Ich hätte auch schon mit der englischen Regierung Fühlung

I said that I was not yet acquainted with H.M.’s decision.

 

At this Ibrahim said that I mustn’t doubt H.M.’s good intentions, even if he didn’t come to an agreement with me. It was true that he was an absolute ruler, but he could by no means do whatever he wanted.

 

“I do understand," I said, ‘'that there is such a thing as the interest of the state which must be observed above all.”

 

“Yes," confirmed Ibrahim, “and for you personally H.M. has a great deal of respect and sympathy. What you want to do for your people is very noble. Le sionnisme est très noble [Zionism is very noble]."

 

I thanked him and said that I would always remain a friend of Turkey and an adherent of this pro-Jewish Sultan. But the misery of our people in Eastern Europe did not permit us to wait any longer.

 אמרתי שהכרעתו של הוד רוממותו עדיין אינה ידועה לי.

על כך השיב איבּרָהים שֶאַל לי לפקפק בכוונותיו הטובות של הוד רוממותו, גם אם אין הוא מסכֵּם אתי דבר. אמנם הוא שליט אבסולוטי, אך בשום אופן אין הוא יכול לעשות ככל העולה על רוחו.

"אני מבין", אמרתי, "שיש שיקול של טובת המדינה שקודמת לכל דבר".

"כן", אישר איבּרָהים, "ולך אישית רוחש הוד רוממותו הרבה כבוד וסימפתיה. מה שאתה רוצה לעשות למען עמך הוא אצילי מאוד. Le sionisme est très noble (הציונות היא אצילית מאוד)".

הודיתי ואמרתי שתמיד אהיה ידיד של טורקיה ושגם להבא אשאר חסיד של הסולטאן הזה, ידיד היהודים. אלא שמצוקתם של אנשינו במזרח אירופה איננה מתירה לנו לחכות עוד.
