Man wollte sich zuerst in Wien u. Berlin erku über mich erkundigen. Als aber V[ámbéry]’s Brief kam, worin er meine Propositionen empfahl, war weiter nichts nöthig. Er plauderte noch hin u. her. die Concession vom Todten Meer könnten wir leicht bekommen, wenn wir dem Sultan einen Theil des Reinertrags der Industrien zusicherten. Ferner:das Grundstück der Dormition habe der Sultan bis auf den heutigen Tag nicht dem deutschen Kaiser ausliefern können, weil der Scheikh-ül-Islam dagegen sei. Wenn ich einmal mit dem Sultan in Verbindung wäre, könnte ich ihn bitten,

This was the only misgiving the Sultan had. I asked whether I could take Vámbéry along to Constantinople. Crespi said that this would even be an enormous advantage, because V. has access to the Sultan at any time. Vámbéry’s recommendation, he said, had done me a tremendous amount of good anyway. At first they were going to make inquiries about me in Vienna and Berlin. But when V’s letter recommending my proposals came, nothing else was required.

 

He chatted some more about this and that. We could easily get the Dead Sea concession, he said, if we guaranteed the Sultan a share of the net profits of the industries. Furthermore: the Sultan had not been able to deliver the “Dormition” plot to the German Kaiser to this day, because the Sheik-ul-Islam was opposed to it.

 

Once I was in contact with the Sultan,

עוד דיבר על דא ועל הא. את הזכיונות בים־המלח נוכל לקבל בנקל, אם נבטיח לסולטאן מקצת מן ההכנסה הנקייה של התעשיות. ועוד: את הקרקע של ה״דורמיציון" לא יכול הסולטאן למסור לידי הקיסר הגרמני עד עצם היום הזה, מפני התנגדותו של השיך אל־אסלאם.

ברגע שיהיה לי קשר עם הסולטאן,
