Ich sah sogleich die Gelegenheit,

ihn zu mir zu zwingen u. liess

sagen, ich könne nicht vor 12

Also kam er.

Ich machte eine bedenkliche

I immediately saw an opportunity to force him to come to me, and sent him word that I couldn’t come before noon. An ambassador doesn’t like to miss the weekend train to Bath.

So he came. I put on a serious face and told him the story of my three-million deposit which I had had to withdraw again.

כשביקשתי קודם לדעת במה העניין, ציווה עלי לנסוע. כשהייתי מוכן לנסוע, ביטל את ההזמנה והודיע לי על העניין.

קוֹסטאקי אַנתוֹפּוּלוֹס שלח אלי למלון את עושה דברו שֶהֶריאַן אֶפֶנדי. הוא ביקש שאבוא לשגרירות כי עליו לנסוע לבּאת׳ בשעה 11. מיד תפסתי שיש כאן הזדמנות לאלץ אותו לבוא אלי וביקשתי להודיע לו שלא אוכל לבוא לפני השעה 12. אין שגריר אוהב להחמיץ את הרכבת לבּאת׳ לפני יום א׳.

ואכן הוא בא.

העמדתי פנים רציניות וסיפרתי לו את הסיפור על הפקדת שלושת המיליונים שנאלצתי להוציא בחזרה [מן הבנקים].
