Eine ungeheure Gehirnanstrengung, da man Jedem eine definitive Erledigung geben musste. Mir war, wie wenn ich 32 Schach= partien gleichzeitig spielen müsste. Und der Congress war grossartig. Während Nordau präsidirte ging ich einmal von hinten in den Saal hinein. Der lange erhöhte (xx) grüne Tisch mit dem  auf der Estrade mit dem erhöhten Sitz des Präsidenten, die Tribüne  grün verhangene Tribüne, der Steno= graphen u, Journalistentisch machten einen so starken Ein= druck auf mich, dass ich rasch hinausging, um nicht befangen zu werden.  Everybody came to me for information about everything, important and indifferent. Four or five people were always talking to me at the same time. An enormous mental strain, since everybody had to be given a definite decision. I felt as though I had to play thirty-two games of chess simultaneously.

 

And the Congress was magnificent. Once, while Nordau was presiding, I entered the hall from the rear. The long, green table on the dais, with the elevated seat of the president, the platform draped in green, the table for stenographers and the press, all made such a strong impression on me that I quickly walked out again, so as not to lose my composure.

תקריות קטנות היו לאין־ספור. 

הכול שאלו אותי על העניינים החשובים ועל עניינים פעוטי־ערך. תמיד דיברו אתי ארבעה־חמישה אנשים בעת ובעונה אחת. זה היה מאמץ שכלי אדיר, שהרי הייתי צריך להשיב לכל אחד דברים ברורים. הרגשתי כאילו היה עלי לשחק בו־זמנית 32 משחקי שחמט.

והקונגרס היה נשגב. פעם אחת כשישב נורדאו בכיסא הנשיאות, נכנסתי לאולם מן הכניסה האחורית. השולחן הירוק הארוך שעל הבימה, כיסא הנשיאות המוגבה, היציע העטוי בד ירוק, שולחן הקצרנים והעיתונאים — כל אלה עשו עלי רושם עז כל־כך, עד שהזדרזתי לצאת כדי שלא אסתחרר.
