lachen nicht sehe, da er sagte:

C’est parceque nous savons que

vous voulez autre chose, que nous

vous confions cette exploitation — vous

ne nous exploiterez pas.

Und er meinte ἐν δυμω: (xx) wir aber

werden Euch exploitiren.

Da muss er freilich früher

aufstehen, ein so grosser Gauner er

auch ist.

Und diesem Spitzbuben muss ich

diesen charmanten Brief schreiben:

Chère Excellence,

sur vos conseils que je devine être dictés

non seulement par un serviteur zélé du Sultan

For example, when he first made me the mine proposal, he hid his face in his hand, and, bending down over his knees, so that I would not see his roguish laughter, he said:

למשל, כשהציע לי בתחילה את המִכרות, טמן את פניו בכפו והתכופף ונשען על ברכו כדי שלא אבחין בצחוק הליצני שלו, כשאמר:

C'est parceque nous savons que vous voulez autre chose, que nous vous confions cette exploitation - vous ne nous exploiterez pas

(היות שאנו יודעים שאתה רוצה דבר אחר, אנו מפקידים בידך את הניצול הזה [של המכרות] מתוך אמון, אתה לא תנצל אותנו).

ובעצם התכוון en thymo [יוונית: בלבו]: אבל אנחנו ננצל אתכם.

לשם כך יצטרך לחכות הרבה זמן, רב־נוכל שכמותו.

ולפרחח הזה עלי לכתוב את המכתב השַרמַנטי הזה [בצרפתית]:

הוד מעלתך,

הרביתי לתת את דעתי על עצותיך, שאני משער שהן פרי המחשבה לא רק של משרת מסור של הסולטאן, אלא גם של ידיד־אמת של היהודים, והחלטתי לפעול לפיהן.
