In der Redactionszeit heute Krach (xx) mit Bacher u. Benedict. Ich sagte Bacher: „Ich bin vom (xx) Kaiser eingeladen mit nach Palästina zu fahren.“ Die Mittheilung deprimirte ihn geradezu. „Finden Sie das nicht interessant?“ fragte ich. „Ich sehe daraus Verlegenheiten für die N[eue] Fr [eie] Pr[esse] kommen. Er hat Sie doch als Zionisten eingeladen.“ „Jedenfalls nicht als Redacteur der N[euen] Fr[eien] Pr[esse]. Sie brauchen auch weiter nichts über den Zionismus zu schreiben. Für Sie das Beste wäre, Sie liessen mich die Sache im Blatt exponiren. — Aber wie Sie wollen.“ Dann mit Benedikt, der wild, scheu und neidisch zur Seite blickte. Ich vermuthe, dass sie etwas auskochen; vielleicht werden sie meine geheime Mittheilung ans auswärtige Amt verrathen. Ich verlangte von ihnen eine Empfeh= lung an den östr[eichischen] Botschafter in Konst[antinopel].

During working hours at the office today, a row with Bacher and Benedikt.

 

I said to Bacher: “I have been invited by the Kaiser to go along to Palestine.”

 

The news actually depressed him.

 

“Don’t you find that interesting?” I asked him.

 

“I foresee difficulties for the Neue Freie Presse arising from this. After all, he invited you as a Zionist.”

 

“In any case, not as an editor of the N. Fr. Pr. You need not write anything about Zionism in the future either. For you the best thing would be if you let me expound the matter in the paper.—But suit yourself.”

 

Then with Benedikt, who looked away wildly, shyly, and enviously. I presume that they are cooking up something; perhaps they are going to disclose my confidential information to the Foreign Office.

 

I asked them to get me a recommendation to the Austrian ambassador at Constantinople through the Foreign Office.

בשעות המערכת היום ריב עם בּאכֶר ועם בֶּנֶדיקט. אמרתי לבּאכֶר: "הקיסר הזמין אותי לנסוע אתו לארץ־ישראל".

ההודעה ממש דכדכה אותו.

"האינך חושב שזה מעניין?" שאלתי.

״אני צופה שיצמחו מזה מצבים מביכים ל־.N.Fr.Pr. הוא הרי הזמין אותך כציוני".

 ״על־כל־פנים לא בתורת עורך של .N.Fr.Pr. אין צורך גם להבא שתכתבו על הציונות. מוטב לכם שתִתנו לי להציג את העניין בעיתון. אבל כרצונכם".

ההמשך – עם בֶּנֶדיקט. הוא הפנה את ראשו הצִדה במבט פראי, מבויש ומתקנא. אני משער שהם זוממים משהו; אולי ימסרו את הודעתי הסודית למשרד החוץ.

ביקשתי מהם מכתב המלצה אל השגריר האוסטרי בקושטא, באמצעות משרד החוץ.
