Ich werde mir schliess= lich erlauben zu sagen, was ich von Ihrer Gnade erbitte.“ Er lachte: „Gut, ich höre!“ Ich zeigte ihm nun die Briefe Plehwes u. des Grossherzogs, um ihm zu zeigen, wie die Sache schon applanirt sei. Als er beim Lesen von Plehwes Brief zur Discretionsstelle kam, sagte er lächelnd: „Je ne dirai rien. Sono una tomba.“

“He won’t want to hear of that. He dislikes the word.”

He laughed: “All right, I’m listening.”

 

I now showed him the letters from Plehwe and the Grand Duke, so he could see to what extent the ground had already been prepared.

 

When he came to the confidential passages in Plehwe’s letter, he said with a smile:

“Je ne dirai rien. Sono una tomba [I shan’t say a word. I am as silent as a grave]."

"כן, אבל אנו זקוקים לאוטונומיה".

"על זה לא ירצה לשמוע דבר. את המלה הזאת אין הוא יכול לסבול".

״די לי בעניין עצמו, Sire! אפשר לכנות אותו איך שרוצים. לבסוף ארשה לעצמי לומר מה ברצוני לבקש מהוד מלכותך".

הוא צחק: "טוב, אני שומע!"

ואז הראיתי לו את המכתבים של פּלֶוֶה ושל הגרוֹסהֶרצוֹג [מבּאדֶן], כדי להוכיח לו כיצד הדרך כבר הוכשרה.

כשהגיע אל הפִּסקה במכתבו של פּלֶוֶה האומרת שהמכתב צריך להישמר בסוד, אמר בחיוך: ״Je ne dirai rien. Sono una tomba״ ("לא אומר דבר. אני כקבר").
