Das habe sich erst jüngst in Görz gezeigt, wo der Kaiser bei Tisch die ganze Zeit mit ihm sprach, so dass Calice der  Constan= tinopler Botschafter ihm nachher sagte: So viel Vertrauen hat beim Kaiser schon lange Niemand genossen! Ich dachte mir mein Theil bei Calice, dessen Fürwort beim Sultan um eine Audienz ich wie einen Bissen Brot brauchen könnte, doch sagte ich nichts, weil der Moment nicht opportun war. Görz, erzählte er noch, sei eine grosse Sorge gewesen. Alle Behörden, namentlich die unteren, zitterten

Then he spoke about the absurdities of the parties, with special reference to the Progressives, who only recently made such monumental fools of themselves in the person of the mayor of Trautenau (who had addressed a request to the office of the Emperor’s advisers to have the competing convention of the German-Radicals prohibited).

 

He told me about the Emperor and how high he was in the latter’s favor. This was evidenced recently at Görz where the Emperor talked with him all the time at dinner, so that Calice, the ambassador at Constantinople, told him afterwards: “It’s been a long time since anyone has enjoyed so much confidence from the Emperor!”

 

I had my own ideas at the mention of Calice whose intercession with the Sultan for an audience would be bread and butter to me, but I didn’t say anything, because the moment was not opportune.

 

Görz, he went on to say, had been a great worry. All the authorities, especially the lesser ones, had trembled for fear of an Anarchist plot.

אחר־כך דובר על סכלותן של המפלגות, בייחוד של "המתקדמים", שבאחרונה המיטו על עצמם חרפת־עולם בדמותו של ראש העיר טראוּטֶנאוּ (שפנה אל לשכת הקיסר בבקשה לאסור קיום ועידה של המפלגה הרדיקלית־הגרמנית המתחרה).

הוא סיפר לי על הקיסר ומה רב החסד שזה נוטה לו. הדבר הוכח באחרונה בגֶרץ. בשעת הסעודה שם דיבר אתו הקיסר ארוכות, עד כי השגריר בקושטא קאליצֶה אמר לו אחרי־כן: איש לא זכה לאמון רב כל־כך מצד הקיסר זה זמן רב!

לי היו מחשבות אחרות על קאליצֶה, שהתערבותו אצל הסולטאן לשם קבלת ריאיון נחוצה לי כאוויר לנשימה, אך לא אמרתי דבר, כי השעה לא היתה כשרה לכך.

העיר גֶרץ, המשיך וסיפר, גרמה לו דאגה רבה. כל הרשויות, ובייחוד הנמוכות, רעדו מפחד מפני פיגוע של אנרכיסטים.
