Ich schreibe ihm: Lieber Herr Lewontin, Ihre Meldungen über den rascheren Geschäftsgang befriedigen mich. Bieten Sie nur all Ihren Scharf=

Just a few words, since you may already have left. Should Cohn be inclined to withdraw the restrictions that we spoke about, this would have to be done cautiously. Otherwise the consequence would be a rush that I wouldn’t want to be responsible for. But I will assume the responsibility if the matter is not publicized and the choice of those to be admitted is left to me or to my men.

Have changed my mind. This letter could do harm and only call attention to the rush. If it comes to it, I shall have time to tell it to the Sultan.

    The organization of the Bank, which the "experts" have been dozing over for the past two years, is occupying me now. Gam zu letauvo [May this too be for the good]! It was necessary for this time to elapse. In the meantime I have learned to administer and to direct. In Levontin I hope finally to have found the suitable instrument for the organization of the Bank. I am writing him:

Your news that business is brisker gratifies me.

אני כותב לו:

ואמבֶּרי בּאצ׳י הטוב שלי,

רק שתי מלים, שהרי אולי כבר יצאת לדרך. אם כהן [הסולטאן] ייטה לבטל את ההגבלות [על הכניסה לארץ־ישראל] שדיברנו עליהן, צריך שהדבר ייעשה בזהירות. שאם לא כן התוצאה תהיה rush (הסתערות), שלא הייתי רוצה לקבל אחריות עליה. אבל אם הדבר לא יפורסם ברבים ובחירת הנכנסים תהיה נתונה בידי או בידי אנשַי, אני מוכן לשאת באחריות.

נמלכתי בדעתי המכתב הזה עלול להזיק ולהדגיש את [סכנת] ההסתערות דווקא. אם יגיע המצב לידי כך, אומר את הדברים לסולטאן בבוא הזמן.

ארגון הבנק, ש״המקצוענים" מזניחים זה שנתיים, מעסיק אותי עכשיו. גם זה לטובה! [במקור: !Gam seh letauwo, עברית במבטא אשכנזי]. הזמן שחלף היה נחוץ. למדתי בינתיים לנהל ולהוביל. אני מקווה שבלבונטין מצאתי סוף־סוף את המכשיר המתאים לארגון הבנק. אני כותב אליו:

מר לבונטין היקר,

הודעותיך על האצת העניינים מניחות את דעתי.
