Eine (xx) jüdische Frau sass einmal in ihrer Stube u. sah zum Fenster hinaus. Da bemerkte sie auf dem Dache gegenüber eine schwarze Katze in Geburtsnöthen. Sie ging hin, holte die Katze u. half ihr beim Entbinden. Dann machte sie der Katze u. den Kätzchen ein Lager auf Stroh über der Kohlenkiste. Nach ein paar Tagen war die genesene Katze verschwunden. Aber die Kohlen auf denen sie geruht hatte waren in lauter Gold verwandelt. Die Frau zeigte es ihrem Manne u. der meinte, die Katze sei von Gott geschickt worden. Darum verwandte er das Gold zum Bau eines Tempels, der Altneuschul. So ist dieses berühmte Haus entstanden. Aber dem Mann blieb ein Wunsch: er wäre als frommer Jude gern in Jerusalem ge= storben. Auch die Katze hätte er Wieder sehen mögen, weil er ihr für den Wohlstand danken wollte. Und wieder sah einmal die Frau zum Fenster hinaus u. bemerkte an der alten Stelle die Katze. Da rief sie rasch ihren Mann: Schau,

A Jewish woman was once sitting in her room and looking out the window. She noticed on the opposite roof a black cat in labor. She went over, took the cat, and helped her to give birth. Then she made a bed of straw on top of the coal bin for the cat and her kittens. A few days later the cat, which had recovered, disappeared. But the lumps of coal on top of which she had lain were turned into pure gold. The woman showed them to her husband, and he said that the cat was sent by God. So he used the gold to build a synagogue, the Altneuschul. This is how that famous edifice came into being. But the man was left with one wish: as a pious Jew he would have liked to die in Jerusalem. He also wished he could see the cat again, for he wanted to thank her for their prosperity. And one day the woman was again looking out the window and saw the cat in its old place. She quickly called her husband, saying:

אישה יהודייה אחת ישבה בחדרה והביטה מבעד לחלון. והנה ראתה על הגג שממול חתולה שחורה שנהפכו עליה ציריה. הלכה לשם, נטלה את החתולה ועזרה לה להמליט את גוריה. אחר־כך הציעה לחתולה ולגורים מצע של קש על ארגז הפחמים. כעבור ימים אחדים החלימה החתולה ונעלמה, ואילו הפחמים ששכבה עליהם היו לזהב טהור. הראתה האישה את הדבר לבעלה, וזה אמר שאלוהים שלח את החתולה, ועל כן בנה בזהב הזה בית־כנסת, האלטנוֹישוּל. כך נוצר הבניין הנודע הזה. ואולם נותרה לאיש עוד משאלה: יהודי ירא־שמים הוא, והוא מבקש למות בירושלים. גם את החתולה מבקש הוא לשוב ולראות, כדי שיודה לה על שהיטיבה עמו. ושוב הביטה האישה מבעד לחלון וראתה את החתולה באותו מקום. אז רצה וקראה לבעלה:
