Wurde mir doch heute vom Commerzialrath Zucker das Präsidium des jüdischen Bourgeois= vereins Union angeboten. Ich lehnte es ab, doch ist der Antrag charak= teristisch. Die Unionisten waren vor einem Jahr meine Spötter u. Gegner   Bambus antwortet, er habe meinen Landkaufvorschlag sofort nach Paris u. London befördert.   18  März [1897] Güdemann auf der Strasse getroffen. Er begleitete mich bis an mein Hausthor u. fing mit verzweifelten Gesten u. In= tonationen an: „Erklären Sie mir den Zionismus. Ich verstehe ihn nicht.“ Ich sagte: Nein, ich erkläre Ihnen nichts

 And it didn't occur to me till later that I had said something funny to him, reminiscent of the saying: la plus noble conquête de l'homme, (c’est le cheval [man's noblest conquest is the horse].'

 

I consider it possible that the N. Fr. Pr. will take up my idea after all. For didn’t Commercial Councillor Zucker today offer me the presidency of the Jewish bourgeois association Union? I declined; but the offer is indicative. A year ago the Unionists were mocking and opposing me.

 

 

Bambus replies that he immediately transmitted my land-purchase proposal to Paris and London.

 

March 18

 

Ran into Güdemann on the street. He accompanied me to the door of my house and opened up with gestures and in tones of despair: “Explain Zionism to me. I don’t understand it.”

 

I said: “No, I won’t explain anything to you any more. Every word is wasted.”

ורק אחר־כך עלה בדעתי שאמרתי לו משהו מצחיק, המזכיר את המאמר: 

 la plus noble conquête de l'homme, c'est le cheval

(הכיבוש הנאצל ביותר של האדם הוא הסוס).

 אני חושב שייתכן ש־.N.Fr.Pr בכל זאת יתייחס לרעיון שלי. הלוא הקוֹמֶרציאלראט צוּקֶר הציע לי היום להיות נשיא האגודה היהודית הבורגנית "אוּניוֹן". דחיתי, ואולם ההצעה אופיינית. האוּניוֹניסטים נמנו לפני שנה עם מלעיגַי ומתנגדַי.

בּאמבּוּס עונה ששיגר מיד לפאריס וללונדון את ההצעה שלי בעניין רכישת קרקעות.

 



18 במארס [1897]

פגשתי את גידֶמן ברחוב. הוא ליווה אותי עד שער ביתי ובהתפתלויות־גוף ואינטונציות של ייאוש, הִקשה: "הַסבֵּר לי מהי הציונות. אינני מבין אותה".

אמרתי: "לא, לא אסביר לך עוד דבר. חבל על כל מלה".
