abermals in Erinnerung bringen. Bald darauf erschien mit freundlicher Miene — Tahsin. Er sagte Ibrahim der es mir wiedergab, ich sei der Gast des Sultans u. eine Hofequipage stehe mir zur Verfügung. Dann bat er mich um ein Exposé meiner Propositionen. Ich gab meine Reisemüdigkeit an — aber la volonté du maître! Tahsin machte ein bedenkliches Gesicht u. ging es melden. Inzwischen setzte ich mich doch stöhnend hin u. fing mit dumpfem Kopf an. Aber es war mir lieber, als Tahsin wiederkam u. den Bescheid brachte, ich könne das Exposé in Therapia schreiben. Ein Diener werde es holen. So fuhr ich von Beschiktasch mit dem Dampfer bis nach Jeniköi, von dort mit dem Wagen hierher

 then I again had the Sultan reminded of my presence.

 

Shortly after that there appeared, with a friendly air—Tahsin.

 

He told Ibrahim, who reproduced it for me, that I was the guest of the Sultan and had a court equipage at my disposal.

 

Then he asked me for a memorandum of my propositions. I pleaded exhaustion from my trip, but—la volonté du maître [the Master’s wish]! Tahsin made a doubtful face and left to report it.

 

Meanwhile I did sit down, moaning and groaning, and started in with a muzzy head. But I felt relieved when Tahsin returned and brought word that I could write the memorandum at Therapia. A servant would come for it. So I went by steamer from Beshiktash as far as Yeniköi, then by carriage here to Therapia,

חזרתי וביקשתי שוב ושוב להזכיר לסולטאן שאני כאן. 

והנה הופיע טאחסין, מסביר פנים. הוא אמר לאיבּרָהים שאני אורחו של הסולטאן ותעמוד לרשותי כרכרה מטעם החצר, ואיבּרָהים תרגם לי את דבריו.

אחר־כך ביקש ממני תזכיר על הצעותי. הצהרתי על עייפותי מיגיעת הדרך – אבל !la volonté du maître (רצון השליט!). פניו של טאחסין הביעו פקפוק והוא הלך למסור את דברי.

בינתיים, למרות הכול, התיישבתי באנחה והתחלתי [לכתוב] כשמוחי עמום. ואולם הוטב לי כשחזר טאחסין ובידו התשובה שאוכל לכתוב את התזכיר בתֵרָפִּיָה. שליח יבוא לקחתו. נסעתי אפוא מבֶּשיקטאש באוניית הקיטור עד יֶניקוֹי, ומשם בכרכרה. לכאן, לתֵרָפִּיָה,
