ruhig u. bescheiden: „In Wien.“ Ich fragte noch, in welcher Weise ich über die Publication verständigt werden würde. Ich würde natürlich nur das veröffentlichen, was mir aufgetragen würde. Er bemerkte kalt: „Auftrag scheint mir nicht das richtige Wort. Höchstens wird man Ihnen gestatten, etwas zu veröffentlichen.“ Diesmal hatte er Recht. Ich empfahl mich. Ob ich dem Kaiser Bilder aus den Colonien mitbringen könne. Herr Kemeth oder Kehmetz hatte nichts dagegen, nur wäre es ihm lieb, wenn wir den Kaiser nicht zu lange auf= hielten. Ihm (xx) ist etwas lieb. Ich erfuhr auch, dass Bülow bei der Audienz anwesend sein würde. Dann ging ich. Abends schickte ich dem wichtigen Herrn Legationsrath die neue Reinschrift mit dem Correctur=Manuscript durch Bodenheimer zu. Er soll in der Abendbeleuchtung nicht ganz ungnädig gewesen sein. Er sagte zu Bodenheimer: „Ihr Vertreter Herr Dr. Herzl

I also asked in what way I would be notified about the publication. I would, of course, make public only what I was instructed to publish.

 

He observed coldly: “ ‘Instructed’ does not seem the right word to me. At most you will be permitted to publish something.”

 

This time he was right. I prepared to leave. Might I bring along some pictures of the colonies for the Kaiser? Herr Kemeth or Kehmetz had no objection; but he would welcome it if we did not take too much of the Kaiser’s time. He welcomes something.

 

I learned, too, that Bülow would be present at the audience.

 

Then I left 

                             

In the evening I sent Bodenheimer to the mighty Herr Legationsrat [Legation Councillor] with a clean copy of the new version as well as the corrected manuscript.

In the light of evening he is said to have been not entirely ungracious. He said to Bodenheimer: 

 

“Your representative, Dr. Herzl, spoke about publicity.

הפעם היה הצדק אתו. נפרדתי ממנו. האוכל להביא אתי תצלומים מן המושבות בשביל הקיסר? האדון קֶמֶט, או קֶמֶץ, אינו מתנגד לכך, ואולם רצוי לו שלא נעכב את הקיסר יתר על המידה. אכן, לו רצוי כך.

 ועוד נודע לי, שבּילוֹב יהיה נוכח בריאיון.

 והלכתי.

 בערב שלחתי באמצעות בּוֹדֶנהיימֶר לאדון יועץ הצירות החשוב את העותק החדש המועתק לנקי ואתו את כתב־היד שבו צוינו ההשמטות. בתאורת הערב הוא היה כנראה אדיב למדי. הוא אמר לבּוֹדֶנהיימֶר: נציגך האדון הדוקטור הרצל דיבר על פרסום.
