Er berichtete zunächst: „Ich habe Ihnen schon im Auftrage des Kaisers alles Wichtige ge= schrieben. Der Kaiser ist sehr warm für die Sache. Es ist mir gelungen, ihn so warm zu machen, sonst hätte es eben gar keinen Werth. Er muss sich für eine Sache sehr interessiren, sonst kann verliert er sie begreiflicherweise bald aus den Augen, da ja so vielerlei vorkommt. Ich habe zwar schon in Wien davon gesprochen, aber da war doch keine rechte Musse dazu. Dann in Rominten war es anders. Da konnte ich wiederholt darauf zurückkommen, und ich that es.“ Ich warf ein: „Es gehört zu den mancherlei merkwürdigen Fügungen, dass wir gerade in Ew Excellenz den Fürsprecher gefunden haben, der ja geradezu der ideale ist.“ Er nickte zufrieden: „Das ist wahr. Wie ich mit dem Kaiser stehe, kann ich anders und mehr mit ihm sprechen, als mancher Andere. Fuer Nicht bald Einer kann so weit gehen. Da gibt es den oder jenen Punkt, bei dem er sich nicht weiterwagen kann,

To begin with, he reported: ‘‘I have already written you everything of importance, at the Kaiser’s order. The Kaiser is very warmly inclined toward the project. I succeeded in making him take this attitude, or else there would simply be no point to it. He has to be greatly interested in a matter, otherwise he soon loses sight of it, which is understandable, because such a great variety of things happen. To be sure, I had already mentioned it at Vienna, but there we did not have the proper leisure for it. Afterwards, at Rominten, it was different. There I was able to return to the subject repeatedly, and I did.”

 

I interjected: “It is one of the many different remarkable dispensations that we should have found an absolutely ideal advocate in Your Excellency.”

 

He gave a gratified nod. “That is true. My standing with the Kaiser is such that I am able to speak to him differently from, and more than, many others. Very few people can go as far as I. There is always one point or another beyond which a man does not dare to go; then he withdraws.

נכנסתי לדבריו: "זה מסוג צירופי הנסיבות המופלאים שמצאנו מליץ דווקא בך, הוד מעלתך, המליץ האידֵאלי".

הוא הנהן בסיפוק: "זה נכון. בזכות יחסַי עם הקיסר יש בכוחי לדבר אתו בצורה אחרת וביתר אריכות משיכול לעשות זאת אדם אחר. לא כל אחד יכול להרחיק לכת כל־כך. פה ושם עולה נקודה זו או אחרת שבה לא יוכל עוד להעז וללכת הלאה, ואז הוא נרתע לאחור.
