Darum wollen sie ein Organ für die Auf= klärung des Publicums schaffen oder acqui= riren.“ Ich glaube aber, der innerste Grund ist die Schaffung oder Acquisition der Baronie für H[er]rn v[on] Schöller. Das geht mich aber nichts an. So rein Geld überhaupt sein kann, so rein ist das Schöllersche u. ich kann (xx) es ruhig nehmen, um eine anständige Zeitung zu machen, umso eher, als Auersperg wiederholt betonte, es solle nur ein unabhängiges Blatt geschaffen werden. Wir verblieben dabei, dass ich noch im Laufe des Tages Näheres über ein Rendezvous mit Schöller hören solle. Ich versprach von

A "group of industrialists" wanted to give the money for a new paper, or for the acquisition of "an old one." This group had turned to Koerber through him, Auersperg. Koerber had said that he knew someone—myself—and so the ball had started rolling. “The fundamental reason for this plan of the industrialists is the impending commercial treaties. I believe, however, that the deepest reason is the creation or acquisition of a baronetcy for Herr von Schöller. But that is none of my business. Schöller’s money is as clean as money can be, and it is all right for me to take it in order to start a decent newspaper, especially since Auersperg kept emphasizing that only an independent journal was to be created.

 

We agreed that I was to get details about a rendezvous with Schöller in the course of the same day. I promised to be at home from five o’clock on.

אלא שזה כלל לא ענייני. ככל שכסף יכול להיות טהור, כך גם כספו של שֶלֶר, ואוכל לקחתו בשקט כדי לעשות עיתון הגון, מה עוד שאַוּאֶרשפֶּרג הדגיש וחזר והדגיש שצריך לייסד עיתון בלתי תלוי ולא אחר.

סוכם בינינו שעוד במשך היום אשמע פרטים על פגישה עם שֶלֶר. הבטחתי להישאר בבית מן השעה חמש.
