Erst als ich gestern hier im Palasthotel den türkischen Botschafter Ahmed Tewfik wieder traf, mit dem zu sprechen ich Anfangs Januar hierhergekommen war, fühlte ich die Nothwendigkeit diese wichtigen Vorkommnisse zu fixiren als eine besonders lastende Pflicht. Ich hatte vor vier Wochen zwei lange Unterredungen mit ihm. Er ist ein sympa= thischer mässig intelligenter Mensch, der Sache nicht ab= geneigt, aber in einer Form, die für uns keinen Werth hat. Er möchte die Juden nach der Türkei ziehen — aber

Not until yesterday, when I had a reunion here in the Palace Hotel with the Turkish ambassador Ahmed Tewfik, whom I had come here to see at the beginning of January, did I feel the necessity of putting down these important events as an especially pressing duty.

 

Four weeks ago I had two long talks with him. He is a likeable man, moderately intelligent, not unfavorably disposed toward the cause, but in a way that has no value for us. He would like to attract the Jews to Turkey—but without a territory of their own and without autonomy.

רק אחרי שחזרתי ופגשתי כאן אתמול ב״מלון פּאלאסט" את השגריר הטורקי אחמֶד טופיק, שכדי לשוחח אתו באתי לכאן בתחילת ינואר, חשתי את הצורך לְקַבֵּעַ את האירועים החשובים הללו, בבחינת חובה שהעיקה עלי במיוחד.

לפני ארבעה שבועות היו לי שתי שיחות אתו. הוא איש סימפטי, אינטליגנטי למדי, לא בלתי־אוהד לעניין, אבל באופן שאין לו ערך בשבילנו. הוא היה רוצה למשוך את היהודים לטורקיה — אבל בלי טריטוריה עצמית ובלי אוטונומיה.
