Er war im Jägercostüm u. mir scheint, das Erste war, dass er meine Kleidung musterte. Ich hatte sorgfältig überlegt, was ich an= ziehen solle u. meinen grauen Salonanzug genommen, obwol das helle Sacco=Complet unter anderen Umständen richtiger ge= wesen wäre. Der helle Anzug wäre familiär gewesen. Ich wollte aber gar nicht den Eindruck machen, als ob ich mich als Be= sucher betrachtete. Ich kam in Geschäften, um eine Nüance weniger habillé als ich in der Stadt gekommen wäre, also grau nicht schwarz. Ich glaube, er fand mich richtig angekleidet. Er führte mich in den grossen Saal, wo eben die ganze Familie war: seine Mutter, Frau, Töchter, Söhne u. deren Erzieher. Ich konnte das sehr elegante Gesammtbild nur überfliegen, keine Details aufnehmen. Ein Billardtisch fiel mir auf, ein Früh= stückstisch, einige schöne alte Bilder u. zu den hohen Thürfenstern dieses ebenerdigen Saales herein schimmerte der herbstliche Park.

He was in hunting costume, and it seemed to me the first thing he did was to take stock of my clothes. I had carefully considered what I should wear, and had taken my grey frock-coat and trousers, although under different circumstances the light-colored lounge-suit would have been more appropriate. The light-colored suit would have been informal. However, I certainly did not want to give the impression that I considered myself a guest. I was coming on business, a shade less habillé [dressed up] than if it had been in the city—that is, grey rather than black.

 

I believe he found me suitably dressed.

 

He led me into the great hall where the whole family happened to be gathered: his mother, wife, daughters, sons and their tutors. I only had time to glance quickly at the very elegant tableau and was unable to take in any details. A billiard table did strike my attention, as well as a breakfast table, a few beautiful old pictures—and the autumnal park shimmered through the tall French windows of this ground-floor hall.

 היה לבוש מדי צייד ודומני שבראש ובראשונה סקר את הלבוש שלי. שקלתי היטב מה ללבוש ולבשתי את החליפה החגיגית האפורה שלי, אף שהחליפה הרגילה הבהירה היתה הולמת יותר בנסיבות אחרות. החליפה הבהירה היתה יכולה להעיד על קִרבה יתרה. ואני לא רציתי כלל לעורר רושם שאני בא לביקור. באתי בענייני עסקים, habillé (לָבוּש) בחגיגיות פחותה מעט מכפי שהייתי בא בעיר, כלומר באפור ולא בשחור. 

אני סבור שלבושי נראה לו הולם.

הוא הוביל אותי לטרקלין הגדול, שכל בני המשפחה היו מכונסים בו: אמו, אשתו, בנותיו, בניו ומחנכיהם. לא יכולתי אלא להעיף מבט בתמונה האלגנטית הזאת, לא קלטתי פרטים. הבחנתי בשולחן ביליארד, בשולחן לארוחת בוקר, בכמה ציורים עתיקים יפים, ומן החלונות הגבוהים שבדלתות של טרקלין הכניסה הזה חדרו נצנוצים של הפַּרק הסתווי.
